A Practical Case Study with Real-World Relevance
This year's Vibeathon focused on the case study: "Know When to Fill Up. Know How to Drive Smart. Save More Every Week."
Fuel price adjustments and rising transportation costs continue to affect daily commuters and vehicle owners in Malaysia. With selected fuel categories being revised periodically under Malaysia's fuel pricing mechanism, many drivers face challenges in managing fuel expenses efficiently and understanding the impact of their driving habits on both personal finances and environmental sustainability.
Key Challenges Explored by Participants
- Limited awareness of fuel price trends and refuelling strategies: Many drivers refuel only when their tanks are nearly empty, without monitoring fuel price trends or planning the best time to refuel.
- Lack of visibility into personal fuel consumption: Most drivers do not actively track how much fuel is consumed during daily travel or how driving behaviours such as aggressive acceleration, long idling periods, and inefficient route selection affect monthly spending.
- Limited understanding of environmental impact: Individual drivers often lack accessible tools to estimate personal transport-related emissions or identify practical ways to reduce fuel consumption.
- Fragmented fuel management practices: Fuel expenses, mileage records, fuel price updates, and driving analytics are often managed separately or not tracked at all, making meaningful insights difficult to obtain.
Encouraging Smarter and More Sustainable Driving
Participants were challenged to propose a system that enables intelligent fuel management by tracking consumption patterns, analysing driving behaviour, and providing insights to optimise refuelling decisions. The proposed solution was expected to help users make more informed choices, reduce unnecessary fuel usage, save costs, and support more sustainable driving habits.
By combining AI, data analytics, and user-centred design, the challenge encouraged participants to think beyond coding and consider how technology can create practical value for everyday users.
